Code Chart for International Letters (HTML and ALT Key)

Many special characters from Latin-based languages can be entered on an English Keyboard as an ALT code, or used in HTML documents as ASCII codes. This chart focuses on international letters for languages such as French, German, and Spanish.

Author: Patricia Lynn

The ALT codes are used to enter the characters as text in programs such as MS Word or Adobe Photoshop. To enter an ALT code from your keyboard, make sure Num Lock is on, use the numeric keypad, and keep the ALT key pressed as you type the numbers.

Instead of using HTML name codes in an HTML document, ASCII codes can be used. This code is &#nnnn; - where nnnn is the 4-digit number displayed in the ALT code column. For example, the ASCII code for the first character is á.
