All websites are not created equal
Ask these questions before choosing a website developer
How is the Website Structured?
Originally, webpages were laid out using tables. Formatting rules were specified in the webpage code. This method produced lots of code, increased load times, and negatively affected accessibility and SEO.
Since about 2000, the W3C* has recommended "tableless" design and Cascading Stylesheets (CSS) for storing structural and formatting rules. This method has many advantages - including easier maintenance, and enhanced SEO possibilities.
Unfortunately, many developers still design websites the old way.
How is the Code Generated?
Webpage code can be written by a highly experienced HTML/CSS programmer, or generated by a software program that helps the designer lay out the webpage.
Most of these programs produce bloated and non-standard code. And it is difficult for anyone but the original designer to maintain the website.
In contrast, code developed by a highly-experienced HTML/CSS programmer will be clean, efficient, and provide advantages. Other experienced programmers should be able to understand and maintain the code if need be.
